In partnership with the European Space Agency and faculty at MIT, SOM is engaged in a collaborative endeavor to design and master plan the first full-time human settlement on the Moon. Presented at the 70th International Astronautical Congress, this paper outlines the goals and summarizes the key design, planning, and engineering considerations.
This report discusses the development of a prototype for anonymously collecting empirical data on room occupancy and circulation patterns for indoor environments. The report is the initial phase of a larger proposal to develop a design methodology that can supplement manual and subjective methods of evaluating interior design decisions.
By maintaining the master model as a platform-free software code, in contrast to platform-dependent methods, this case study illuminates the advantages of documenting the generative logic behind design variations in a way that allows greater flexibility and a higher level of alignment with design intent.
With rapid changes in technologies, the challenge is not to find individuals who know how to use the latest BIM product but to find those who have a clear understanding of the fundamentals and are able to adapt. This paper looks at the development of innovative new technologies as a result of SOM's partnerships with universities.
