On Thursday, May 4th, Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago, joined Michele Smith, Alderman for Chicago’s 43rd Ward, and civic officials, community leaders, and local residents to celebrate the groundbreaking of The Lincoln Common, a new 1.1 million-square-foot mixed-use development at the heart of Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Developed by Hines and McCaffery Interests and designed by SOM in partnership with Chicago-based Antunovich Associates, The Lincoln Common is set to revitalize the site of the former Children’s Memorial Hospital.
“As Children’s Memorial Hospital comes down, a new community comes up,” Emanuel said. “The Lincoln Common is a new chapter in the history of Lincoln Park. This will last for generations to come and will be a place where families can all come together.”
“We can already feel the impact of this development on our community,” Smith said. “The Lincoln Common will be a new crossroads on Chicago’s North Side.”
Designed to serve as a vibrant neighborhood center, The Lincoln Common creates a diverse mix of retail, office, and residential units linked by a network of gardens and courts centered around a public plaza. The Lincoln Common is located adjacent to one of the city’s busiest transit corridors, and is sited along the Lincoln Avenue cultural corridor, within walking distance to the Apollo Theater, Lincoln Hall, and Victory Gardens Theater.
