Call for Entries: SOM Foundation 2017 China Prize

Students in architecture and urban design can now apply for the SOM Foundation 2017 China Prize, which consists of three $5,000 USD traveling fellowships. The prize allows emerging design leaders to broaden their education through travel and to gain a deeper understanding of how their work will contribute to the built and natural environments.

The China Prize is open to undergraduate and graduate students based in China who are in their last two years of a degree program in architecture or urban design; Chinese citizenship is not required. To enter, students should submit a portfolio, research proposal, and travel itinerary. Applications must be submitted online through the SOM Foundation website by Friday, April 14th, 2017. A jury of leading architects and design professionals in China will select the winners.

Li Dai, a 2016 China Prize winner who studied public space and religion in South Asian cities, spoke about the impact of this opportunity: “The fellowship may have established my long-term career aspiration to improve the built and natural environments concerning Asian ecological and cultural identities,” she said. Wang Jinhui, a 2015 winner who had never traveled abroad before, reflected on his sense of “awe and humility” during his travels in India and Japan: “Information from the internet and books can never take the place of personal experience.”

The SOM Foundation grants a variety of awards to students of architecture, design, urban design, and structural engineering. The Foundation’s goal is to instill in its fellows a heightened sense of responsibility as future design leaders. First awarded in 1981, the SOM Foundation fellowships are now an important measure of achievement among architecture and engineering students and their colleges and universities. The awards given are: the SOM Prize for Architecture, Design and Urban Design; the SOM Travel Fellowship for Architecture, Design, and Urban Design; the Structural Engineering Travel Fellowship; the UK Award; and the China Prize.
