Two SOM projects have been named as Best Project Award winners by the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI). The awards were announced at the SEAOI Annual Awards Banquet, which was held virtually on July 10th, 2020.
100 Mount Street in North Sydney, Australia was named Best Project exceeding $100 Million. Evocative of SOM’s design for 875 North Michigan Avenue (formerly the John Hancock Center) in Chicago, 100 Mount Street is supported by an innovative cross-braced exoskeleton structure that was developed using topology optimization algorithms and classic structural analysis. The 38-story office building offers panoramic views of Sydney Harbor, the Sydney Opera House, and Sydney Harbor Bridge.
Dream Catcher, an art installation at the Sunset La Cienega Hotel in West Hollywood, California was created by artist Janet Echelman and engineered by SOM. The installation won Best Project Award in the Special Structures Category.
SEAOI’s Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards competition takes place every year recognizing innovative achievements in structural engineering design and contributions that advance the industry.
