On Friday, October 12th, 2018, SOM will lead a tour of Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television at The Campus at Playa Vista on the Westside of Los Angeles. The tour is part of the STRÖL: AIA|LA Interior Architecture Committee Fall Tour 2018. The event includes stops at other projects in the area, including the YouTube Space LA by HLW International LLP, and Central Park and The Brickyard by Michael Maltzan Architecture. The term “STRÖL” refers to key aspects of the projects: sustainable, tech, relevant, outdoor, and leisure.
Playa Vista is a community just north of the Los Angeles International Airport and 1.5 miles from the beach. Located on property once occupied by Howard Hughes’ airfield and hangars, it has been developed into a mix of new homes, creative offices, retail, event spaces, and a network of parks and open spaces. The Campus at Playa Vista, a Class A office development within the larger community, has attracted a variety of creative, technology, and media firms such as Google, Yahoo, YouTube Space LA, 72andSunny, and the University of California’s Institute for Creative Technologies.
SOM’s design for Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television dedicates 35,000-square-feet of space to the school’s graduate programs for screenwriting and production and 15,000-square-feet of space for other programs. It is envisioned as an organized network of learning environments: small and large; focused and collaborative; and efficient and flexible. The Campus at Playa Vista location is intended to create synergies between students, faculty, visitors, and industry leaders.
