William F. Baker Delivers Keynote Address at AAG Conference in Sweden

On Tuesday, September 25th, SOM Structural Engineering Partner William F. Baker will provide the keynote address at the 2018 Advances in Architectural Geometry (AAG) Conference. The biennial symposium centers on the role of geometry in architecture and engineering. Practitioners in fields including computer science, mathematics, architecture, and engineering will discuss ?recent advances in both theoretical and practical work linked to new geometrical developments.

Baker has led SOM’s structural engineering practice for more than 20 years. He is known for developing the buttressed core structural system for the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest manmade structure. Baker’s expertise extends to long-span roof structures and specialty structures such as the Broadgate Exchange House in London and the Entrance Pavilion for General Motors’ Headquarters in Detroit. Baker has also collaborated with numerous artists, including James Carpenter (“Schubert Club Band Shell”), Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle (“Gravity is a Force to be Reckoned With”), James Turrell (“Roden Crater”), and Jaume Plensa (“World Voices”).
