Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

Surrounded by Victoria Harbor on three sides, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre occupies a highly visible location in this growing city. SOM’s extension to the building became a prototype for convention center design when it opened in 1997. Today, the center remains an important landmark.

The principal design element is a distinctive roof, whose undulating, wing-like forms create an iconic image for Hong Kong. The roof allows for a dramatic, 75-foot-high vaulted ceiling above the convention hall, with column-free spans of 80 meters. The extension contains a broad range of facilities, including three exhibition halls, two theaters, 52 meeting rooms, seven restaurants, and various support facilities. An array of restaurants, shops, galleries, and other public spaces surround the building’s base, engaging the center with its bustling urban setting.
