Metal Architecture magazine recently announced SOM’s Baccarat Hotel & Residences as a winner of its 2015 Metal Architecture Design Awards. Completed this year, the project was honored with the Smooth Metal Wall Panels Award. Organized by Metal Architecture magazine, the program recognizes design excellence and creativity in the metal industry.
Designed by SOM, the 605-foot-tall, mixed-use tower consists of exclusive condominiums, a luxury hotel, and a public library in Midtown Manhattan. The eastern and western elevations of the building are sheathed in faceted, jet-black aluminum composite material. These solid frames provide the main structure of the building and contrast with the shimmering glass of the northern and southern facades.
The judges for the 2015 Metal Architecture Design Awards admired the tower’s “3-D quality” and “very clean lines that make for a very holistic approach to the detailing.” The panel cited the Baccarat Hotel & Residences as “fabulously executed with a straightforward concept that represents everything the category represents.”
