Picasso Sculpture

Chicago, Illinois

When SOM began their design for the Chicago Civic Center in the early 1960s, senior partner William Hartmann envisioned a large-scale public monument to anchor the plaza in front of the building. An admirer of Pablo Picasso, Hartmann traveled to the artist’s home in France to present the project. Working from Picasso’s detailed guidelines, Hartmann supervised a team of SOM structural engineers who facilitated construction of the artwork. The piece was Picasso’s first work of monumental sculpture in America, standing 50 feet tall and fabricated of Cor-Ten steel. After its public unveiling, the untitled masterpiece would come to be known simply as “the Chicago Picasso.”
