Chongming Island Master Plan
Shanghai, China
The key to SOM’s award-winning Master Plan for Shanghai’s Chongming Island was a program to preserve and advance agriculture as the island’s major economic engine. The plan incorporates sustainable techniques to facilitate the development of a series of dense, transit-rich cities housing nearly one million people, yet occupying less than 15% of Chongming’s land.
