University Center at The New School Wins 2015 AIA/CAE Education Facility Design Award

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has honored SOM’s University Center at The New School with a 2015 Educational Facility Design Award. Organized by the AIA’s Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE), this year’s edition of the annual awards program recognized “projects imbued with flexible programs and collaborative teaching spaces.”
The jury selected the University Center at The New School as one of nine winners, highlighting the building’s design as “a masterful assemblage of diverse program elements with different volumetric requirements and wonderful interior spaces.” The facility integrates both academic and social space while fitting “amazingly within its context” of the surrounding community.

Located at the intersection of 14th Street and 5th Avenue in Manhattan, the University Center at The New School combines classrooms, studios, and labs with student life, performance, faculty, and residential spaces. The multipurpose facility creates a new hub for the University, promoting collaboration and interaction in its various social spaces and flexible, interactive zones.
