Two SOM Projects Honored in Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Awards

Two SOM projects, the Wild Mile and Moon Village, have been recognized by Fast Company in the 2020 World Changing Ideas Awards. The program recognizes innovations that solve some of the world's most complex challenges. Both projects were honored in the Spaces, Places, and Cities category.

The Wild Mile, a 17-acre floating eco-park designed in collaboration with Chicago-based Urban Rivers, was selected as a finalist. The project will create a new environment for habitat, education, and recreation on the Chicago River. It advances a community-led vision of renewed urban ecology that helps strengthen neighborhood connectivity, generate cleaner water, and support more vibrant ecosystems.

Moon Village, developed in partnership with the European Space Agency and faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, received an honorable mention. The project presents a concept for the first full-time settlement on the lunar surface. With habitat modules planned for the rim of Shackleton Crater near the Moon's South Pole, Moon Village is envisioned as a large-scale, integrated, and self-sufficient development.
