Three SOM projects won Gold Awards in the Fall 2018 Spark Awards competition. Spark is a community of design professionals as well as representatives from academia, media, and other fields. Founded on the mission to promote design that effects positive change, the organization recognizes good design through international competitions, exhibitions, media, and workshops.
SOM's Kinematic Sculpture won a Spark Award in the Engineering Design category. The one-of-a-kind 27-foot-long pavilion is made of hinged wood panels. Inspired by ancient origami techniques and driven by the mathematical relationships between force and motion, it can be transformed into various configurations with minimal effort. SOM's in-house research teams combined emerging ideas with established engineering principles to create the sculpture.
Poetic Structure: Art + Engineering + Architecture won in the Spaces Design category. The exhibition, designed by SOM architects and engineers, was presented in collaboration with the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles in the summer of 2018. Through a series of interactive displays at the historic Schindler House and gardens, the exhibition explores the intricate connections between art, engineering, and architecture.
The Chengdu Tianfu International Airport general plan also won in the Spaces Design category. The plan calls for transforming agricultural land near Chengdu, China into a development that prioritizes sustainability, urban livability, and economic opportunity. The project is designed to eventually accommodate two million residents.
