Stony Brook University has released its proposal, designed by SOM, for a new campus on Governors Island conceived to generate transformative environmental, economic, and social solutions to the climate crisis. The campus, dubbed “The New York Climate Exchange,” convenes schools, institutions, scientists, activists, and thought leaders to create a hub of innovation to solve one of the most pressing issues facing the planet.
The Exchange itself is designed to be part of the solution. Its planning goes beyond net zero, with goals to create a net positive, energy-generating campus incorporating carbon capturing technology and a treatment plant to recycle all of its water. It is an equitable and inclusive campus committed to amplifying the novel climate solutions being developed on the island.
