On Thursday, February 1st, the SOM Women's Initiative (SOMWI) hosted a panel discussion focused on the advancement of women in the design profession. SOM Partner Carrie Byles led the conversation at the Allsteel Showroom in San Francisco.
Research shows that a significant gender disparity persists throughout the architecture profession, and the gap is especially evident at the highest levels of design leadership. SOM organized the event to examine this industrywide problem, and to explore strategies that can continue to support equitable career development within the firm.
In addition to Byles, speakers included Yasemin Kologlu, SOM Design Associate Director; Marsha Maytum, Principal and co-founder of Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects; Anne Fougeron, Principal and founder of Fougeron Architecture; and Elizabeth Ranieri, Design Principal and co-founder of Kuth Ranieri Architects.
The SOM Women's Initiative, established in 2011, positions SOM as a leader in the design community by challenging barriers to gender equity and by fostering the retention and growth of women. SOMWI seeks to create an excellent, innovative, and sustainable workplace that reflects the firm's commitment to enhancing the built environment.
