On Monday, October 1st, SOM won New York's S.L.A.M. Softball League championship. As day turned to dusk at the unlit Heckscher Field in Central Park, SOM defeated Robert A.M. Stern Architects in Game 2 of the best-of-3 series. The final score was 8-3. SOM narrowly took Game 1 by a score of 7-5.
The 2018 championship game marked the end of a season filled with wins, only a few losses, and many rain cancellations. SOM finished with a 9-2 record and its eighth S.L.A.M. championship.
S.L.A.M.—or "Softball League Apres Moderne"—was formed in New York in 1980 and includes teams representing architecture and design firms around the city. In 2018, a total of 12 teams competed: SOM; Robert A.M. Stern Architects with Heitler-Houstoun; TPG Architecture; Spector Group; Ronnette Riley with Davis Brody Bond; Hart Howerton; Mitchell Giurgola Architects with Superstructures; Gensler Associates; FXCollaborative; Kohn Pedersen Fox Architects; Ennead Architects; and Perkins Eastman.
