SOM to Discuss The Milstein Center at SCUP Conference

On Monday, March 11th, SOM Design Partner Colin Koop and SOM Associate Director Meredith Bostwick-Lorenzo Eiroa will speak at the 2019 North Atlantic Regional Conference of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) in Rochester, New York. The conference will focus on how colleges and universities serve as catalysts for local and regional transformation, innovation, and revitalization.

Alongside Jennifer Ann Green, Dean of the Library at Barnard College, Koop and Bostwick-Lorenzo Eiroa will discuss The Milstein Center at Barnard College. Using the New York City school’s library as a case study, the three will explore how to build a consensus around a strong design vision while shaping rich, interdisciplinary learning experiences through purposeful planning that is rooted in an institution’s unique culture, character, and place.

The Cheryl and Philip Milstein Teaching and Learning Center at Barnard College, opened in 2018 and located on the school’s Morningside Heights campus, serves both Barnard and Columbia University students. The Milstein Center celebrates Barnard’s collections and archives while providing new pedagogical opportunities for faculty and scaffolding new learning experiences for its students. In addition to the library, The Milstein Center provides conference facilities, interdisciplinary workspaces for four academic departments, and a new home for the Athena Center for Leadership Studies and the Barnard Center for Research on Women.
