SOM Supports RIBA Declaration on Environment and Climate Emergency

On June 27th, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) formally agreed to join the global declaration of an environment and climate emergency at the triannual meeting of the RIBA Council members.

As a member of the RIBA Ethics and Sustainable Development Commission and the RIBA Expert Advisory Group of Sustainable Futures, Associate Mina Hasman helped inform this motion, which drives support for the UK government’s commitment to a 2050 net zero greenhouse gas emissions target.

“We must embrace our responsibility as designers in alleviating climate change, and acknowledge that transformative actions are needed for a regenerative future,” says Hasman. “This is the time to be bold, courageous, and innovative. And it is time for us all to come together as an industry to address the biggest challenge facing our planet.”
