SOM Participates in China Design Open Course

On Monday, November 5th, SOM Associate Director Thomas Kinzl and Associate Weiqi Wang will speak at the China Design Open Course symposium. Held in Zhengzhou, China, the event is part of a multi-city event sponsored by Sina Home. The symposium has dual themes: “Looking for the Soul of a Contemporary City” and “Design Evolution: Dialogue in the Central Plains.”

The China Design Open Course brings participants together to exchange knowledge across disciplines in order to drive innovation in design throughout China. The event will showcase culturally significant architectural landmarks in the city as well as across China, including SOM’s Zhengzhou Greenland Plaza, Greenland Jinan Shandong International Finance Center, and Tianjin CTF Finance Center.?

Kinzl and Wang will give a presentation on and lead a tour of Zhengzhou Greenland Plaza. Zhengzhou Plaza, at 280 meters in height, is one of the tallest buildings in the region. The distinctive tower has a cylindrical column profile and is illuminated in yellow at night. Reminiscent of the style of an ancient Chinese pagoda, it has become a landmark of the Central Plains and reflects the architectural heritage of the region, with the curve of the main building coinciding with Pagoda of Songyue Temple.
