SOM Participates in 2018 Facades Plus Conference in Chicago

On Friday, September 21st, SOM Technical Director Lucas Tryggestad and Architectural Associate Director Dan O’Riley will co-chair the 2018 Facades+ Conference. Joining Tryggestad and O’Riley will be SOM Design Associate Maria Palencia, who will also moderate a panel.

The conference, which returns to Chicago for the first time in three years, presents innovations in facade technology, building skins, and sustainable design practices. Events include a morning symposium, afternoon workshops, and a methods and materials gallery. The full-day event opens with a welcome by co-chair Dan O’Riley, who will be joined by Diana Darling of The Architect’s Newspaper.

The morning symposium begins with Lucas Tryggestad moderating a panel titled “Chicago Rising: High-Rise Buildings,” which presents some of the challenges and triumphs in large scale facade fabrication in Chicago.

Following Tryggestad’s panel, Maria Palencia will moderate a panel titled “Enclosure and Light: Visuality, Health, and Beauty.” Panelists will discuss light as an essential feature of the building skin and how best to utilize it.

Dan O’Riley will close the symposium as moderator of a panel titled “Going Modular: Delivering the Next Generation of Facades.” Panelists will share insight on advances in modular building methods and delivery systems with new techniques and offsite fabrication.
