SOM Offices Worldwide to Participate in Daylight Hour

At noon on June 20, SOM offices worldwide will participate in Green Light New York’s “Daylight Hour.” For a single hour, the lights in daylit spaces within SOM’s offices will be turned off to draw attention to driving down the use of electric lighting.

The event is timed to coincide with peak energy demand time: summer afternoons. During these hours, energy is the most expensive and the most harmful to the climate because the oldest, dirtiest, and least efficient power plants are brought in to satisfy the bulging demand.

Green Light will track participants and estimate the energy savings of the Daylight Hour to publicize the impact of the event. Daylight Hour will act as a springboard to deliver programs and other resources on the strategies and technologies that enable the daylighting of office spaces. Read more about daylight impacts on energy use in Green Light’s “Let There Be Daylight” report, downloadable from their website.
