At the recent general elections for the Shanghai Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Shanghai), Silas Chiow, Director of SOM's China office, was selected as vice president for 2018. In 2019, Chiow will assume the role of president.
Established in 2014, AIA Shanghai is dedicated to providing industry practitioners in China with a platform for exchanging ideas and learning opportunities. As AIA's only chapter in mainland China, the Shanghai chapter also aims to promote a higher standard of design and education, and to advance the relationship between its members and the Chinese government.
Chiow, a founding member of the chapter, currently serves as an AIA Shanghai Executive Committee member. In his new role with the organization, Chiow aims to facilitate exchange programs between the chapter and other professional and industry institutions, providing growth opportunities for practicing architects while raising the standard for China's design industry, and contributing to a healthier and more sustainable country.
Chiow became Director of SOM's China office in 2003. In his three decades of experience, Chiow's portfolio includes the Shanghai Taipingqiao & Xintiandi Specific Plan, the Beijing CBD East Expansion, and the Tianjin Binhai CBD Mater Plan.
