On March 25th, 2019, SOM joined the Kansas City Aviation Department, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, major airlines, developer Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate, design-builder Clark | Weitz | Clarkson (CWC), and organized labor and business representatives to break ground on the Kansas City International Airport New Terminal, a state-of-the-art travel hub.
The Kansas City Star reports on the groundbreaking of the new single terminal at Kansas City International Airport. The terminal, which is scheduled for completion in 2023, will include 39 gates and will have flexibility to expand to 50 gates in the future.

Contract reports on the voter-approved plan to move forward with a new Kansas City International Airport. Initial designs center on the consolidation of three terminals into one and include floor-to-ceiling windows, and an undulating rooftop, among other elements.
On November 7th, 2017, Kansas City voters approved a new, single-terminal airport in Kansas City (KCI). SOM is working with lead developer Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate on the design of the world-class airport, a process that will include a series of design open houses.
