In September, Yue Zhu, Thomas Kinzl, Martin Liepmann, and Phil Obayda will speak at Virtual Festival of Facades. The event, an ongoing series of panel discussions and workshops on facade engineering and design, is presented by Zak World of Facades.
On October 1st, 2018, Philip Enquist, Andrew Obendorf, and Benton Johnson spoke at a research symposium at the University of Tennessee (UT) Governor’s Chair for Energy + Urbanism and the UT Institute for Smart Structures. The event was titled "Governor's Chair Large-Scale Additive Manufacturing in Design."
In collaboration with SOM, researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center are leading a new program to advance innovations in 3D-printed structures. The research demonstrates that a concrete barracks with a precast roof can be engineered to be structurally safe for occupancy.
SOM will participate in the 2018 symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures, an event for which SOM is also one of the sponsors. SOM Partner William Baker and others will deliver presentations at the symposium.

On December 6th, 2017, Brian Lee was honored at the HIVE 50 conference. At the event, which centered on a discussion of the future of housing, Lee shared insight on AMIE 1.0, a research and design collaboration that shares energy between a 3D-printed, natural gas–powered vehicle and a 3D-printed building.
Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin reports on the winners of the 2017 AIA Chicago Design Excellence Awards. SOM received an Honor Award in the Divine Detail category for AMIE 1.0, and Citations of Merit for the Chinatown Branch of the Chicago Public Library and Dallas City Performance Hall.
The Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored three SOM projects—AMIE 1.0; the Chinatown Branch of the Chicago Public Library; and Dallas City Performance Hall—in the 2017 Design Excellence Awards. The awards were presented on October 13th, 2017.
