The Middle East chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored four SOM projects in its 2015 Design Awards, marking the second consecutive year that SOM has won more awards in this program than any other firm. Al Hamra Tower and Cayan Tower were recognized in the built projects category, and Al Ahmadi Cultural Center and Nozul Lusail Marina earned accolades for unbuilt projects.
As reported in Architect Magazine, Al Hamra Tower won the High-Rise Buildings category of the Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards, presented by the American Concrete Institute. The SOM-designed supertall skyscraper features a 4-meter-thick raft of reinforced concrete, which supports the structure's gravitational loads.
