Moscone Center Expansion Wins SEAOC Award of Excellence

The Moscone Center Expansion and Improvement project in San Francisco has been honored with the 2020 Award of Excellence by the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC). Each year, the SEAOC Awards bring together projects recognized by their local member organizations (SEAOCC, SEAONC, SEAOSC, and SEAOSD) to celebrate the “best of the best”—projects which represent models of excellence in structural engineering throughout the state of California.

The renewed Moscone Center, located in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood, offers an expansive collection of light-filled gathering spaces. Designed by SOM with Mark Cavagnero Associates, the Center is part of a 25-year master plan designed by the same team.

The project included the renovation of Moscone North; a new three-story, structural steel Moscone South building; a pair of elevated pedestrian bridges; and an expansion by connecting the subterranean portion of the site below Howard Street. To deliver this complex project, SOM’s structural engineers worked with a team that included Tipping Structural Engineers and SOHA Engineers.
