Moscone Center Expansion Breaks Ground in San Francisco

On May 21, 2015, SOM Design Partner Craig Hartman and SOM Associate Director Mark Schwettmann attended the groundbreaking ceremony for San Francisco’s Moscone Center expansion and improvement project

Moscone Center, which originally opened in 1981, has a highly visible civic presence and is a major economic engine in San Francisco’s vibrant South of Market neighborhood. Slated for completion in the summer of 2018, the expanded and improved convention center will create 515,000 square feet of contiguous exhibition space, while serving as a global example for urban connectivity and environmental responsibility.

The design process for Moscone Center was inclusive and collaborative. For over two years, a local and interdisciplinary SOM team, in partnership with Mark Cavagnero Associates, worked with multiple stakeholders to develop the final designs. Those parties included San Francisco government agencies, the Moscone Expansion District, Webcor Builders, and the San Francisco Travel Association together with its clients, community, and neighborhood leaders.
