On Thursday, October 12th, Mana Contemporary Chicago and SOM will host a panel discussion on the poetry of structural design in conjunction with "SOM: Engineering x [Art + Architecture]," an exhibition produced by Mana Contemporary Chicago in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The panel is presented in partnership with Ace Hotel Chicago.

The panel will examine the thesis of the exhibition by exploring the unique poeticism of structural design for architecture and the creative arts. Using the essay "Structure as Poetry" from DETAIL Engineering 4: SOM Structural Engineering as a launching point, panelists will discuss the poetry of structural architecture and the intersection of engineering, architecture, design, and history.

The panel will be moderated by Maria Garlock, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University. Panelists include architect Vincent Chang, Partner at Grimshaw; artist James Carpenter; historian Nicholas Adams, Professor of Art at Vassar College; and, from SOM, Scott Duncan, Design Partner; Mark Sarkisian, Structural and Seismic Engineering Partner; and William F. Baker, Structural and Civil Engineering Partner.
