JTI Headquarters Wins Award of Merit in 2016 CODAawards

Designed by SOM, JTI Headquarters has received an Award of Merit in the Commercial category of the 2016 CODAawards. Presented annually by CODAworx, the CODAawards honors design projects that demonstrate the most successful integration of commissioned art into an interior, architectural, or public space.

Liam Gillick’s commission for JTI Headquarters exemplifies how art and architecture can be unified through thoughtful interplay. His installation was designed to reinforce SOM’s “continuous landscape” concept, which creates a seamless experience throughout the building by integrating three spatial typologies: landscape, social amenities, and dedicated work space. Users of the building experience Gillick’s colorful, immersive artwork as they travel through the interior. Unfolding along interconnecting stairs and extending into each floor, the installation directly communicates the design concept that threads the building’s nine stories together.
