Innovative Engineering of Mumbai Airport Published in DETAIL Magazine

In the October 2016 issue of DETAIL, an international architecture and engineering journal, SOM Director Charles Besjak describes the structural engineering of Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, in Mumbai. Designed and engineered by SOM to accommodate up to 40 million passengers per year, the 410,000-square-meter facility features a number of structural innovations. The long-span roof covers 70,000 square meters, making it one of the world’s largest roofs without an expansion joint. The terminal also features the largest and longest cable wall system in the world. Furthermore, the structure uses a modular design to reduce costs and simplify construction.
