On Wednesday, July 24th, SOM hosted the firm's first Big Build Test Day competition in the New York office. To participate, structural engineering, architecture, and interior design interns were divided into four teams. In these groups, interns collaborated with their peers to design and build a tower over the course of two weeks.
At the event, the four towers were weighed and measured to gauge total materials usage and height. Each group gave a five-minute presentation on their tower in front of a panel of judges, followed by a short Q&A and discussion. Towers then underwent drift and load tests to assess performance under lateral loads. Scores were decided based on the following criteria: height, weight, aesthetics, performance, and people's choice.
