On Thursday, July 26th, SOM Associate Director Frank Mahan will deliver a keynote address at the 4th Biennial Conference of the International Society for the Philosophy of Architecture. The conference will take place at the SOM-designed Center for Character & Leadership Development (CCLD) at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado.
Mahan will discuss a selection of SOM's projects that revisit the firm’s midcentury work. He will share insight on the 2001 curtain wall replacement at Lever House (a landmarked building originally completed in 1952), and CCLD, a 2016 addition to the U.S. Air Force Academy (a campus that was originally designed in 1954 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2004). He will also discuss the adaptive reuse of One Chase Manhattan Plaza (now known as 28 Liberty and completed in 1961) and Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company – 510 Fifth Avenue (completed in 1954), both in New York City.
Founded in 2009, the International Society for the Philosophy of Architecture aims to "promote rigorous analytical engagement with the subject of buildings and cities, and give both disciplines—philosophy and architecture—equal weight." This year's conference focuses on the theme, "Building as Service."
