On Tuesday, November 28th, SOM Design Director Eric Keune will commemorate SOM's 81st anniversary in a lecture titled "SOM at 81: Making New History Since 1936." Keune will present a brief overview of SOM's history as a multidisciplinary practice, from its founding in Chicago up through the present day. Keune will also discuss current local and international projects, including the exhibition "SOM: Engineering x [Art + Architecture]," which is on display through January 7th. Hosted by AIA Chicago as part of the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial, Keune's lecture is free and open to the public.
SOM's Chicago office is currently leading several large-scale urban master planning projects in the city, including the redevelopment of the Michael Reese site, and the first new building to emerge from the sites surrounding the Finkl Steel plant along the Chicago River at 1515 West Webster Avenue. The firm also recently completed the Chinatown Branch of the Chicago Public Library, and is leading the design of the recently approved mixed-use Taylor Street Library and Apartments.
