On Monday, June 11th, SOM Director Daniel Ringelstein spoke at an event hosted by the Institute of International and European Affairs. His lecture was titled “Smart Cities for the 21st Century: A New Age of Urban Electrification.”
The leader of the City Design Practice in SOM’s London office, Ringelstein discussed how cities around the world are embracing electrification—the process of converting city systems to the use of electrical power—in transportation and energy supply and how this can influence future city form and public realm. He shared insight on how urban planners and designers can look to developments in new technologies as a means for designing smarter cities, and discussed the resulting potential reduction in carbon emissions that these initiatives can bring to cities of the future.
