After escaping demolition and years of dashed hopes for redevelopment, old Cook County Hospital reopened as a hotel, food hall and home of Cook County medical offices. The West Side project, by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and KOO architects, gave new life to a powerful symbol of compassionate care for the poor at the very time that doctors, nurses and other medical professions battled the coronavirus.
