The Chengdu Tianfu International Airport City was named one of the top three design projects to receive a 2018 "AllSpark Award." At an awards ceremony in January 2019, renowned design thinker Arnold Wasserman announced this year’s winners.

Hundreds of designers from top brands participated in the 2018 Spark Design Awards program. Jury deliberations took place in San Francisco and Hong Kong, with winners chosen in a multidisciplinary process by experts from various design disciplines.

The Chengdu Tianfu International Airport City plan calls for transforming agricultural land into a development that prioritizes sustainability, urban livability, and economic opportunity. The project was recognized as a “systematic approach to a vast, clean-tech assignment,” noted one juror, who went on to say that SOM's design “epitomizes a successful merging of large-scale thinking and granular attention to all the details."

"We seriously need to have more designers and companies focusing on humanity and paying attention to our environment; practice for which [this project] is a stellar example," added another juror.

In addition to winning one of this year’s top honors, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport received a Spark "Gold Award" in the Spaces Design category.

The other 2018 "AllSpark Award" winners announced at the ceremony were Mir Yoon’s SEED vaccine injector and the Google Pixel Earbuds.
