Charles Besjak to Present at ASCE Structures Congress 2014

Charles Besjak, SOM Director of Structural Engineering, will present three papers at the American Society of Civil Engineers Structures Congress in April. Besjak will speak about three SOM buildings: Busan Lotte Town Tower, Pearl River Tower, and Shenzhen Shum-Yip Tower One. On Thursday, in a session titled “Integrated Design of Tall Buildings,” Besjak will discuss how the triangular shape and distinctive stacked massing of the 510-meter-tall Busan Lotte Tower minimizes extreme wind conditions on the waterfront site in southern Korea. At the same session, Besjak will also present on Pearl River Tower, a project that required close coordination between SOM architects and engineers to realize the tower’s unprecedented sustainability goals. Preetam Biswas, SOM Associate Director of Structural Engineering, will moderate this panel. On Friday, Besjak will speak about the gravity and lateral load resisting system within Shum-Yip Tower One at the “Optimization in Tall Buildings” session.
