Archtober Building of the Day Tour: Lever House

On October 23rd, SOM Associate Director Frank Mahan will lead a tour of Lever House as part of Archtober’s Building of the Day program. Taking place in New York City, Archtober is an annual month-long festival of architecture. The Archtober Building of the Day program celebrates both contemporary and iconic architecture throughout New York City with daily on-site tours, led by architects involved in each project.

Lever House, located on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, is one of SOM’s most iconic buildings. Built in 1952, the corporate headquarters was one of the first glass-walled International Style office buildings in the country; it established a new architectural vocabulary and set standards for office design around the world. More recently, SOM oversaw the replacement of the building’s curtain wall, setting a precedent for the restoration of a modern landmark. A glittering jewel in the Manhattan cityscape, this 20th-century icon expresses the power of enlightened design to turn office space into a work of art.

In addition to the Building of the Day tours, Archtober will also present lectures, films and exhibitions that focus on the importance of architecture and design. Event resistration is now open to the public.
