SOM's Al Hamra Tower has been named 2014 Commercial Project of the Year by the Middle East Architect Awards. For this category, judges considered projects with integrated sustainable initiatives that facilitate a superior work environment. Now in its seventh year, the Middle East Architect Awards recognize projects that have positively contributed to the architecture industry in member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Located in Kuwait City, Al Hamra Tower is distinctive for its performance-driven form, innovative engineering strategies, and thoughtful response to climate conditions. The 412-meter office building is the tallest structure in Kuwait and the tallest building in the world to have a continuous stone facade. The sculptural skyscraper anchors a commercial complex that comprises offices, a health club, and a high-end shopping mall. Al Hamra’s profile sets it apart from other high rise buildings and is symbolic of Kuwait’s emerging leadership in the global business industry.
