AIANY’s Emerging New York Architects Committee Visits SOM

On Tuesday, July 16th, SOM’s New York office hosted the Emerging New York Architects Committee of AIA New York (AIANY). The event was part of the “Beyond the Boards” event series. In a presentation titled “The Midtown Mile,” SOM staff members profiled the firm and design process before spotlighting three current projects.

Director Nicole Dosso welcomed the attendees, and Director Kim Van Holsbeke and Associate Director Preetam Biswas introduced the presentation. Highlighted projects included Manhattan West and the multiple phases of Moynihan Train Hall, the project to convert the James A. Farley Post Office building into a new part of Penn Station. Presenters from each project team outlined design strategies and discussed some of the unique challenges faced throughout these projects. Dosso then led the presenters in a Q&A session. At the conclusion, guests toured the SOM office.

The AIANY Emerging New York Architects Committee engages New York City’s diverse emerging design professionals through lectures, design competitions, and networking opportunities, with a focus on professional development, design excellence, and public outreach.
