A.C.T.'s Strand Theater Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Takes Place in San Francisco

On May 14, 2015, the American Conservatory Theater formally opened the Strand Theater with a highly attended ribbon cutting at the venue, located in San Francisco's Mid-Market neighborhood. A.C.T.'s brand-new performance space rehabilitates a 1917 movie house that had been shuttered since 2003. SOM, led by Michael Duncan, SOM Design Director, provided architecture, structural systems, and graphics for the renovation.

Duncan was one of six speakers at the ceremony, whose lineup also included Carey Perloff, artistic director of A.C.T., and Mayor Ed Lee. In his remarks Duncan thanked the project's many dedicated contributors. He also charted how their work secures the relevance of the building for future generations of theatergoers — integrating its historic shell with state-of-the-art technology and inviting Market Street and the greater San Francisco community into the daily life of A.C.T.
