111 Main Wins Award of Excellence for Structural Engineering

The Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) has named 111 Main, an office tower designed by SOM, as the winner of a 2018 Award of Excellence in Structural Engineering. The project won in the New Construction category.

Designed to anchor a larger urban redevelopment in downtown Salt Lake City, 111 Main features an innovative structural engineering solution to resolve a complex site challenge. Its construction followed a parallel timeline with an adjacent building, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater. SOM designed 111 Main to be suspended above the theater from a steel hat truss, in order to accommodate the theater’s functional space requirements.

The SEAONC Awards celebrate excellence in the structural engineering profession by acknowledging outstanding achievement in creative design, technical innovation, best practices, and contributions to the public. A panel of six jurors, consisting of two structural engineers, a professor of structural engineering, a general contractor, and two architects, judged this year’s entries.
