RegenLA: Los Angeles Beyond Sustainability
Using Los Angeles as a case study, SOM is developing a systems-based approach to define the regenerative city—a concept of sustainable urban development built on a restorative relationship with the environment. Founded in the City Design Practice principles, this research paper and infographic advances SOM's global thinking about the city of the future. It is the product of an interdisciplinary collaboration across the firm.
Gunnar Hand, SOM City Design Practice Leader in Los Angeles, presented this research at the PLEA Conference in July 2016. Regen LA is one component of SOM’s global RegenCities research initiative, which seeks to move beyond a sustainable framework to one that is net-positive in order to evolve our thinking and bring new perspective in how the practice designs and shapes cities that are more equitable, just, and livable.
