Master Planning and Space Architecture for a Moon Village
In partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA) and faculty at MIT, SOM is engaged in a collaborative endeavor to design and master plan the first permanent human settlement on the Moon. Presented at the 70th International Astronautical Congress, this paper outlines the goals and summarizes the key design, planning, and engineering considerations.
The “Moon Village” concept, first proposed by ESA Director General Jan Woerner, is based on global cooperation among multiple nations and industry partners. SOM has contributed its expertise in architecture, engineering, and master planning to envision a sustainable lunar settlement that can be expanded over time. The design for the Moon Village is based on modular habitation units, which are optimized for a range of parameters: structural efficiency, environmental protection, functional needs, and human comfort.
