Intelligent Densities / Vertical Communities
In an attempt to deal with London’s housing crisis, SOM has taken several steps to establish an innovative, flexible, and sustainable high-density housing typology to accommodate future growth in the city. An analysis of existing density and transport access combined with a proposed refinement of the city’s Design Guidelines can allow for a new typology—a fully-flexible tower that can incorporate various apartment sizes, uses, and amenity spaces. SOM then investigated the possibility of building this new typology with sustainably sourced British timber, showing that carbon emissions could be cut by 80 percent.
This research for a new model to deliver vertical communities at intelligent densities was first presented by Kent Jackson at a New London Architecture breakfast talk in July 2015, and later at a taped TEDx event in December 2015.
