SOM: The Engineering of Architecture

Engineering of ArchitectureThe exhibition Sky’s the Limit: The Engineering of Architecture focuses on the structural engineering behind some of SOM’s most innovative buildings. It is presented at the Utzon Center, in Aalborg, Denmark, from October 2016 to January 2017.

The exhibition includes an assortment of sculptural models, life-size details, photography, interactive animations, and video, giving insight into the groundbreaking structural engineering solutions for some of the world’s most complex projects. Through a play of scale, visitors encounter an environment where the body mediates between a building’s large-scale massing and its small-scale detailing.

This booklet presents the 26 architectural models exhibited in the gallery, which represent the range of structural systems used by engineers at SOM. From Exchange House (65 meters tall) to the Burj Khalifa (at 828 meters, the tallest building in the world), the catalogue explores the world of high-rise design.
