A director and interior design practice leader in SOM’s New York office, Lois Wellwood is a champion of design excellence. She is a leader in crafting transformational workplace strategies, designing innovative retail interiors, and conceiving precedent-setting hospitality and residential spaces. She is experienced in leading multi-disciplinary teams through all phases of a project, and in delivering projects for both private and public sector clients.
Wellwood’s expertise is focused on workplace design and strategy. She is intrigued by today’s dynamic workplace, and by the question of how organizations can efficiently and effectively adapt to change and support multiple functions throughout a typical day at the office. Wellwood works to forge strong partnerships with clients to understand their workplace drivers, functional requirements, and culture. She leads teams through a sequence of master planning, strategic planning, and design to create concepts that anticipate how people will use and feel in a space. Through engagement, Wellwood is able to integrate the various aspects of a project—intuitive spatial arrangements, views to the outside and across interior spaces, lighting, acoustics, materials, and furniture, for example—in a cohesive way that speaks to the client’s culture and the nature of their work.
Wellwood also has expertise in the hospitality and residential sectors. Her designs support comfort, connectivity, and fulfillment. She is inspired by the variety of organizations she works with and the multiplicity of workplace cultures she encounters in SOM’s interiors practice. With knowledge of a wide range of clients and programs, she brings breadth and nuance to every design challenge.
At SOM, she has served as design leader and manager for projects for Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, IPsoft Inc., and JPMorgan Chase & Co. Prior to joining SOM, she designed numerous headquarters projects in major cities in Canada.
