University of North Carolina Genome Science Building – Sustainable Design

The 210,000-square-foot Genome Science Lab consists of research, office, and classroom space. Among the building's many sustainable features are high-performance glazing, integrated shading devices, chilled beams, concrete with a high thermal efficiency, and a green roof. Moreover, much of the exterior structure is exposed, eliminating the need for a finish application and reducing the cost of materials and labor.
Together, the various sustainable strategies are designed to cut energy consumption by 10 percent and decrease energy costs by 14 percent, based on ASHRAE Standard 90.1 2004.
