University of California Merced – Central Plant Complex – Sustainable Design

Certified LEED® Gold, this project is at the core of an ambitious sustainability strategy for the University of California Merced. The 41,000-square-foot complex consists of three buildings: a telecommunications hub, a three-story plant that houses most of the university’s power and infrastructure operations, and a two-million-gallon thermal energy storage tank.

Since the campus opened in 2005, the Central Plant Complex, in combination with other energy-efficient buildings, has contributed to annual energy savings of 30 percent to 50 percent. The complex also serves as a pedagogical tool: A glass ribbon wraps the main building, allowing views of interior processes. The building serves as a “living laboratory” for environmental science students.
