Enhancing the Syracuse Orange’s training facilities

Named for NBA star Carmelo K. Anthony, who played for the Syracuse Orange and provided the initial donation for construction, this facility provides both a learning and training center that helps attract and retain top athletes. The building includes two NCAA regulation-size basketball courts, strength and conditioning rooms, hydrotherapy pools, classroom space, a video room, offices for coaching staff, and locker rooms for the men’s and women’s teams.

The location of the “Melo Center,” built as part of a master plan to reorganize and modernize the entire Lampe Athletic Complex, was carefully sited on axis with the Manley Field House, the university’s multi-purpose arena. Tucked into a landscape that rises behind the building to a wooded high point, the low-rise structure features a striking entrance that glows in the hue of the team’s signature color at night.

The building’s entrance doubles as the Syracuse Basketball Hall of Fame—a spacious and light-filled trophy hall for the university’s basketball program. Lined with aluminum and glass trophy cases, large graphic banners, and projected displays, the space allows screened views into the practice courts.

Creating a supportive environment

The tripartite organization of the basketball facility provides focus for the athletes’ training, creates a stimulating learning environment, and showcases the Syracuse Orange basketball program. The focal point of the project is the double-height practice area located at the center of the building and enclosed by translucent panels. Support spaces and coaching offices are closely arranged around this space, providing constant access and views to the courts. A fitness center and training area with physical therapy suites helps the athletes stay in top form throughout the season. On the second floor, the coaching offices are located adjacent to classroom space for game preparation and the video coordination room for tape review and video production.

I think it creates motivation. You come in and you see the facilities and you see that Syracuse cares about their athletes and they care about what they’re using.

Incorporating sustainable design strategies

LEED-certified, the structure is designed to use 30 percent less water and 20 percent less energy than a typical new building. More than half of the construction and demolition waste was recycled or reused, and about 20 percent of materials in the building were made from recycled components.
